Gen Z & Social Media

BEYOND THE FEED

In today’s world, Gen Zers, like us, are redefining how we engage with social media, placing greater value on real-life experiences and meaningful connections. New insights have challenged much of the conventional thinking about our attachment to social platforms, suggesting that we are spending less time on social media in favor of more authentic, shared experiences.

This left us intrigued and led us to reflect:

  • Does this align with our own experiences?
  • What about our friends?
  • How have our perspectives on social media evolved over time—and why?
Below are our personal thoughts.

Britney Caprio, Senior Marketing Associate, VAB

“As a 25-year-old Gen Zer, I’ve experienced both the upsides and downsides of social media. Over the last few years, the downsides have become increasingly prominent. These platforms are designed to be addictive, providing endless glimpses into the lives of strangers and everything in between. The turning point came when I realized each mindless scroll left me feeling emptier, bringing more negativity, unnecessary comparisons, and drama that had nothing to do with me.

This realization pushed me to close several of my social media accounts. Now, I actively choose joy—scheduling time to watch new TV episodes with my roommates, hosting gatherings, and going to the movies with friends or family. These are the moments of real connection that I cherish, moments that I will remember for a lifetime, not the endless chatter of social media.”

“While I enjoy social media and its content, when it comes to connecting with friends and family, we bond over premium video experiences like Dancing with the Stars and the upcoming Wicked movie. Social media may be designed to keep us connected, but for me, real conversations happen when we dive into the latest reality TV drama or binge the same series together.

There's something special about sharing these moments, building connections through the shows we love, and having those genuine, in-depth conversations beyond the scroll.”

Tiffany Chen, Associate Director, Marketing, VAB

“My friends and I talk a lot about stepping back from social media and living more in the present. As working adults, we are more intentional about scheduling in-person time together. The report mentions Gen Z's obsession with tangible tech, which resonates with us too. When we do meet up, someone usually brings along an analog or retro camera—be it film, Polaroid, or digicam.

Capturing memories this way feels more fun and meaningful. Instead of scrolling through phone photos, we have these tangible mementos to stick on the fridge or hold in our hands, grounding our time together in something real and lasting.”

These are just a few themes we've seen emerging.
