Nielsen Delays Big Data as Currency

Industry Advocacy in Action

As you are aware, earlier this month MRC reinstated Nielsen’s accreditation for its panel-based national TV ratings service. Nielsen’s Big Data in National service remained unaccredited, with several outstanding irregularities identified by VAB leadership and its Measurement Innovation Task Force.

Our goal has always been to ensure marketers have accurate and transparent measurement data upon which to make strategy decisions. To further this goal, and to eliminate confusion in the marketplace, we have pressed Nielsen to come to a formal decision on the readiness of this Big Data service as a currency in the imminent upfront marketplace.

We are glad to share that our industry now has clarity. Nielsen has announced that while its Big Data in National service will be available for measurement purposes, its panel-only National TV audience measurement service (C3/C7) will be the currency of record for the 2023-2024 TV season. Nielsen’s decision to delay the currency use of their new Big Data product gives both buyers and sellers time to evaluate this new data set and develop confidence in its accuracy as a currency-worthy cross-platform truth set.

As our valued partners, we will continue to keep you updated on these important updates.
